Guests, friends, family, travelers, welcome to all.
The Quarry House, located in Hannibal, Missouri would like to host your stay for whatever brings you to our beautiful and historic river town. We are your hosts Laurel and Charlie Phillips and we have restored and created this beautiful landmark house for you to enjoy during your stay. To begin, you might like to know the history of The Quarry House and how it aged through the years, and how it has come to be. You might like to know a little about your host and current owners, Laurel and Charlie.
The Quarry House was built in 1902 by two men, Mathew Hueston and William Bland, who owned the quarry that the house now sits on. They built a turn of the century duplex and they both lived here with their families with the house being evenly divided down the middle. The construction and subsequent renovations showed it was originally built with gas lighting and later converted to electric lighting. Although it's no longer visible, the original gas light piping still remains. The walls are 21" thick and made of large stone blocks. 26 windows measuring nearly 7" tall surround the house on two stories. A center wall also 21" thick runs the length of the house from the floor of the basement to the peak of the roof making it one of the most solid and sturdiest houses of its day past and present! The Quarry House is situated on a standalone property with no adjacent houses and surrounded by steep hills and equally steep ravines making it wonderfully private. The original families who built the house and lived there, had all passed away or had moved out by 1927.
A succession of owners bought and sold the house over the years. Starting in middle 90's, the house gradually fell into a decline for the next 20 years. It was during that time, the house developed a reputation of "Mysterious and murky nature". Children and adults would cross the street while passing by and rumors about the housed swirled. Then, our journey begins. We purchased the house in December of 2018 and began demo and rebuilding in Aug of 2020. Working 7 days a week and countless hours of planning and design we finally completed the restoration in early May of 2021 and opened our doors to guests on May 20th 2021, and so here we are happy to have finished a grand restoration, happy to achieved our goals of elegance and comfort, and very happy to be your host here at The Quarry House.
About Us
We are your hosts and owners of The Quarry House. Laurel and Charlie Phillips. Before we began The Quarry House project, we, like so many others, worked our jobs, raised our family, and lived our lives right up to the day we began construction. It sounds like a Hallmark movie, but we fell in love with Hannibal and the house from the first moment we arrived here. We just knew it would be our hometown! From the very start, Hannibal has been very good to us. The wonderful river setting and scenery is remarkable. The history of Hannibal is deep and colorful as is the history of some of its most famous citizens. From Mark Twain to the unsinkable Molly Brown, many notable people have lived here or passed through. Every corner of Hannibal comes with a colorful history. From the caves to the riverboats, the land and surroundings all have remarkable stories to tell. You should never get bored or lack for things to do while visiting our wonderful town. As your hosts, we will be able to help suggest things to do and places to go during your stay. If you ask, we might even regale you with stories of local legends and lore, after all, even America's hometown has secrets to tell!!
Laurel, in addition to raising our children was a former photographer, chef, deli manager and part time research genealogist. She was born and raised in the small village of Cherry Valley Illinois and attended photography school in Chicago Illinois. She went on to marry and raise two wonderful children. Laurel has been the inspiration and design force behind The Quarry House and worked there daily to oversee the renovation and quality as well as the overall décor planning.
Laurels husband and business partner, Charlie was born in the northern California town of Salinas and moved to Wisconsin at age 10. Attended school in Beloit, Wisconsin and days after graduation enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served his country for 6 years in his beloved corps. Charlie had many exciting years and jobs after the marines. Some more memorable work he did was; salvage diving the Pacific, long haul trucking and executive waiting at 2-3 star restaurants. He later went on to join AT&T as a splicer spending many years working in the manholes and tunnels underneath the Chicago Southside. He eventually retired from there in July of 2020 only 2 weeks prior to construction.
Together, we have achieved a wonderful life through good times and bad by the bonds that we share and a deep love and respect for each other. The Quarry House project was a shared vision and we both put in our all to achieve it. We hope that during your stay with us you will feel our passion and efforts to make your time here the very best. Please enjoy our house, enjoy our beautiful town, and enjoy yourselves all the time your here.
With warm regards,
